ARM (originally Acorn RISC Machine) was developed by the same group of Brits who made the Acorn home computer. Rather than invest in manufacturing the core themselves, they developed and then licensed the design openly to chip manufacturers.
Nearly all SmartPhones are ARM based as is the Raspberry Pi... which makes ARM programming a critical skill.
